Fiber Design, Component Size to be NEFC Topic

Tdrive to improve fiber design and fiber end-face requirements to fulfill expanding applications for single-mode fiber will be topics at the New England Fiberoptic Council (NEFC) monthly dinner meeting, to be held Feb. 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel Boston/Westborough in Westborough, Mass. Cathy Ciadiello, military, avionics and sensing marketing manager for the Specialty Photonics Div. of OFS (formerly the optical fiber solutions division of Lucent Technologies Inc.), which has a facility in Sturbridge, Mass., will discuss single-mode fiber core expansion to reduce misalignments and to meet the requirements of increased transmission laser power. Ciadiello was formerly with Lucent, 3M Specialty Optical Fibers Inc., and ITT Cannon Electric and Cablewave Systems Inc. William Emkey, founder and CEO of WorldTech Consultants Inc. and formerly vice president and CTO of the kSARIA Corp., will also speak, about integrated fiber-lens technology and applications. Previously, Emkey was vice president of technical marketing at Lightchip Corp. and worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories and Lucent Technologies in the design, development and packaging of numerous passive and active optical components. Emkey has been awarded seven patents. The monthly NEFC dinner meeting is open to the public. A reception will be held at 6, dinner at 7 and presentations at 8.
