Triangle Leads Funding for Laser Startup Klastech
Klastech Karpushko Laser Technology GmbH announced it has received €2.1 million in its Series A funding round, led by Triangle Venture Capital Group, which focuses on university and research spinoffs in Germany.
Klastech started operating in 2006 based on the results of the work of photonics research scientist Fedor Karpushko, who is also Klastech's managing director and founder. It is located in Dortmund, Germany, among micro- and nanotechnology companies involved in the high-tech incubation center MST factory dortmund.
Klastech makes diode pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers used in equipment for semiconductor production, in the pharmaceutical industry and in scientific applications. It said its optical design reduces the complexity of conventinal lasers to deliver a "breakthough in beam quality that opens up many new application areas" and enables the laser to be manufactured in an industrial process instead of the more traditional craft production method. Klastech added that it intends to replace argon ion and helium-cadmium lasers in their existing applications; it said it will use the proceeds from the funding round to build up its international sales and marketing and expand its product portfolio.
