Microvision to Develop Laser Projectors for Motorola

Microvision of Redmond, Wash., announced it has signed an agreement with Motorola to develop pico projector displays for mobile applications, using its PicoP ultraminiature laser-based display engine. Tiny laser-based projectors are expected to provide "big screen" viewing from mobile devices, enabling users to project content from a device screen onto a wall, object or even a curved surface. Rob Shaddock, chief technology officer for Motorola's mobile devices business, said, "We are pursuing ways that projection technology can redefine how mobile consumers view and interact with the media they take with them." Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but the companies said they will work together initially to integrate a PicoP projector with a functioning mobile device in a prototype handset that will use Microvision's new WVGA (854 x 480 color pixels) wide-angle scanner, which was demonstrated at the Society of Information Display annual conference in May.
