Lucent Technologies Plans Layoffs at Georgia Plant
Telecommunications giant
Lucent Technologies announced plans to cut up to 425 jobs at its plant in Norcross, Ga. The facility will continue to expand its production of fiber optic cable, however.
Of the 3000 positions at the plant, the company plans to eliminate 175 managerial positions and 250 manufacturing jobs held by union members. Workers will be offered incentives to leave voluntarily and can apply for jobs at other Lucent facilities. The company said the layoffs are part of an effort to make operations more efficient and to place sales and management staffs closer to customers.
