Luxtera Forms OIDA Silicon Photonics Alliance
Luxtera Inc. said today it is forming a silicon photonics alliance within the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA). Members of the new alliance, or "community of interest," will participate in forums, identify key applications areas and promote silicon photonics within optical standards groups to assure interoperability among vendors. Luxtera engineer Tom Palkert will head the group. Companies that have already joined the alliance include Corning, Kotura, Molex and US Conec. It will officially launch in conjunction with OIDA's "Perspectives on the Optoelectronics Industry: Advances, Challenges and Growth Opportunities" forum, being held this week in San Jose, Calif. Luxtera introduced Blazar, a 40-Gb optical active cable that combines optical modules and copper cables to deliver high-bandwidth interconnect using CMOS photonics technology, the silicon technology used to make microprocessors.
