Telcoms to Gather at ECOC

Seven of the world’s leading telecom operators will gather under the banner of the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) on the exhibition floor of ECOC 2007, the European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication, to be held Sept. 16-20 at the Internationales Congress Centrum Berlin.

During the exhibition (Sept. 17-20), AT&T, China Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom Group, KDDI, Telecom Italia and Verizon will present results of the 2007 OIF Worldwide Interoperability Demonstration -- On-Demand Ethernet Services. The showcase of dynamic Ethernet services over multiple control plane-enabled intelligent optical core networks will be the first conducted in Europe.

“With all the major industry players gathered in Berlin, ECOC is the ideal location to showcase the results of this high-profile, worldwide collaborative demonstration,” said Hans-Martin Foisel, a senior project manager in the technology center at T-Systems International/Deutsche Telekom and OIF Carrier Working Group chair and vice president. “We will be able to demonstrate interoperability to all the key players from all levels of the communications industry,” he said.

ECOC will feature more than 300 exhibitors and a comprehensive speaker lineup addressing key industry topics. Speakers will include Gregory Raybon, a member of Alcatel-Lucent's technical staff, on "100 Gbit/s: ETDM Generation and Long-Haul Transmission"; Biswanath Mukherjee a computer science professor at the University of California Davis, on "Optical Networks: The Road Ahead"; and Russell Davey, optical networks unit manager for BT, on "Long-reach Access and Future Broadband Network Economics."

The exhibition will also feature a number of new, interactive features: an FTTx resource center, a live demonstration area, a free training area in fusion splicing and fiber preparation tools; and the second ECOC Market Focus seminars, which this year will feature presentations from Foisel and executives from BT, Ericsson, JDSU and Bookham.
