LED Maker Buys Veeco MOCVD Systems
Veeco Instruments Inc. of Woodbury, N.Y., said two of its TurboDisc E450 As/P metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) systems recently sold to Xiamen Sanan OptoElectronics of Xiamen, China, are being used to expand its capacity for producing red, yellow and orange (ROY) high-brightness LEDs (HB-LEDs). Kechuang Lin, general manager of Sanan, said demand has increased for its LEDs in sign and display applications. Engineered for the high-volume production of compound semiconductor materials, Veeco’s TurboDisc As/P systems are also used in making heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs), pseudomorphic high-electron mobility transistors, solar cells and laser diodes. Xiamen Sanan Optoelectronics makes ultrahigh-brightness LED wafers and LED chips and optical communication devices and is a member of the National Semiconductor Lighting Project, launched by the Chinese government in 2003.
