Raytheon EO/IR System for Navy Advances to Production

Raytheon Co. of Waltham, Mass., said it achieved a milestone in the US Navy's Zumwalt-class destroyer program after a design review of the ship's electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) system; the Navy has given Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems the go-ahead for production. The EO/IR system enables 360°, 24-hour situational awareness, automated mine-like object detection, and guidance for defense gunnery. It can discern targets day and night and in high- and low-contrast environments. Five sets of hardware and embedded software the five sensors to be combined and used together or individually on five separate missions. Raytheon will complete the EO/IR "sensor-to-glass" thread, from target detection to workstation display.
