Qualcomm to Supply Display Technology to KTF

Qualcomm MEMS Technologies Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Inc. of San Diego, announced today that KT Freetel (KTF), a Korean WCDMA wireless operator, has selected its MEMS-based mirasol display technology for its Show WCDMA (wideband code division multiple access) monitoring systems. The companies are demonstrating the system at the 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week in Las Vegas. The Show monitoring system uses 3G WCDMA to transmit live video from a camera device to a mobile phone; it has applications in commercial asset monitoring and the consumer and enterprise markets. Video streams directly to the handset, enabling Show users to view live video from locations of their choice. Motion sensors send SMS alerts to the handset when there is motion near the base. The products will be introduced in 2008 in the Korean market, with other locations to be announced. KTF will announce distribution with retail partners at a later date. Qualcomm's mirasol display is based on a reflective technology called interferometric modulation (IMOD), which mimics the mechanisms that naturally create the colors in a butterfly wing. The highly reflective mirasol display enables users to view information in a variety of ambient light conditions, including bright sunlight. The mobile phone in the demonstration uses Qualcomm's mobile-station modem baseband processor.
