Global Photovoltaic Initiative Is Created
In an effort to promote the growth of the solar industry, SEMI has created a global photovoltaic initiative that includes the formation of the SEMI PV Group.
SEMI, an association in San Jose, Calif., that serves manufacturing supply chains in several industries, is seeking to increase growth through reduced costs, efficient technology transfer and global market development, and by monitoring industry standards and market statistics. About 20 percent of SEMI’s members are active in the photovoltaic industry.
Some estimates project that the global photovoltaic market will expand from its current $13 billion to more than $40 billion by 2012. According to SEMI, the industry is dependent upon continued technological development, cost reduction, responsible public policies and industry collaboration for continued long-term growth.
The SEMI PV Group will address the obstacles to making the technology available, along with the opportunities. The suborganization is working with industry associations, including the European Photovoltaic Industry Association, the Japan Photovoltaic Energy Association and the Solar Energy Industry Association.
