Corning Files Suit Against Fibercore Ltd.

Corning Inc. in Corning, N.Y., has filed suit against Fibercore Ltd. of Southampton, UK, claiming unfair competition and an infringement on two of its optical fiber patents. Corning is seeking an injunction and unspecified damages.
The dispute relates to an optical waveguide containing P2O5 and GeO2, which Corning patented in 1982. In addition, the company said statements on Fibercore's Web site that say Corning has no quarrel with Fibercore Ltd. are untrue and amount to unfair competition.
In a dispute last year, Corning sued the similarly named Fiber- Core Inc. (based in Jena,Germany, and not affiliated with Fibercore Ltd.) over patent infringement. The companies eventually settled out of court after FiberCore acknowledged the validity of Corning's patent.
