QPC Lasers Joins 3D@Home Consortium

QPC Lasers Inc. of Sylmar, Calif., a maker of semiconductor lasers for the consumer electronics, industrial, defense, and medical markets, announced it is a founding member in the 3D@Home Consortium, an international alliance of 22 companies formed to commercialize in-home 3-D entertainment. QPC has a $12 million contract to provide its BrightLase chips for Laser TV applications; the chips are also compatible with technology formats including LCoS (liquid crystal on silicon), DLP (digital light processing), LC (liquid crystal) and micromirror microdisplay devices. "We believe that 3-D-enabled displays using this technology will create an even more immersive experience for the user and allow BrightLase-based visible lasers to be exploited to their full commercial capacity," said QPC Lasers CEO Jeffrey Ungar, PhD. Other members of the 3D@Home Consortium, organized by the US Display Consortium and Insight Media, include: Philips, Samsung, Corning, Planar Systems, the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems, and Holografika.
