US Patent Awarded to Dr. Geoff Andersen

Dr. Geoff Andersen, a laser physicist at the United States Air Force Academy’s Laser and Optics Center in Colorado, has been awarded a US patent for his development of a holographic image corrector. Dr. Andersen devised a type of microscope that uses an inexpensive, low quality objective lens of any size and combines it with a specially designed hologram to compensate for aberrations and to provide clear images. The device can be designed to have a wider field of view than normal microscopes and it allows researchers to see more of the object. With simple modifications, it can be configured to provide three-dimensional contour mapping so that it can be used in viewing and projection modes. The patent was filed jointly with the Air Force; Dr. Andersen built and tested it with cadet physics research majors. This is Dr. Andersen’s third patent since commencing at the Academy 12 years ago.
