Lucent Commercializes 40-Gb/s Systems
MCI WorldCom will test a single-laser transmission system capable of sending 500,000 simultaneous phone calls per second over one fiber optic cable. The maximum capacity of most current systems is 10 Gb/s.
Lucent Technologies Inc. is touting its time division multiplexing system as being capable of operating four times faster, transmitting information at 40 Gb/s. Lucent plans to deliver its system to MCI WorldCom by the fourth quarter of 1999.
