Laser Contract Awarded

Schafer Corp. is being awarded a $9.8 million contract from the US Navy for research and development associated with Directed Energy and Electric Weapon Systems, according to the US Department of Defense.

Schafer specializes in technology applications for industries including biotechnology, energy, defense, space and wireless.

Under the agreement, the company will design, engineer, analyze and test high-electron laser, free-electron laser, high-power microwave, electromagnetic launch, terahertz sources and detectors, and high-energy sources related to acceleration of particles. These systems could be used to detect and destroy weapons of mass destruction and the vehicles carrying them.

The work will be performed in Washington and is expected to be completed by July 2014. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.
