Yale Med School Wins NIH Grant
A five-year, $2.5 million NIH Director’s New Innovator Award was granted to Derek K. Toomre, assistant professor of cell biology at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn., to develop optical techniques for a new generation of microscopes that will aid in researching diseases such as cancer and diabetes. The instruments will permit researchers to watch membrane trafficking and signaling in three dimensions, especially at the cell cortex. Toomre’s group will apply the technology to understand the trafficking pathways that regulate insulin-stimulated delivery of glucose transporters to the cell surface.
