RVSI Unit Installs 50th Scanning Tunnel

CANTON, Mass., May 7 -- Robotic Vision Systems, Inc. reports that its Acuity CiMatrix division has installed its fiftieth laser-based scanning tunnel for high-speed material handling systems. Acuity CiMatrix has also received more than $300,000 in orders from two European customers--a postal service and a parcel handling company--for installation of scanning devices to sort packages. Scanning tunnels read and track bar codes applied to any surface of a container moving at high speed. Typical scanning tunnel applications involve the sorting of postal and overnight delivery service packages, sorting of luggage in airports, and the tracking of items to be shipped for mail-order firms. The division's fiftieth scanning tunnel was recently installed at a major package delivery firm.
Pat Costa, company CEO, attributes the company's success to its integration of traditional bar code and machine vision orientations. He commented, ``RVSI brings a long history of two-dimensional and three-dimensional machine vision expertise in areas such as semiconductor manufacturing, where thousands of accurate inspections per second is the demand placed on every supplier.''
