Toshiba's New LCD Facility Begins Operation in Japan
DEERFIELD, Ill., May 19 -- Toshiba America Electronic Components Inc. reports that Toshiba Corp. of Japan has commenced operations at the newly completed poly-silicon TFT manufacturing facility at the company's Fukaya Works in Saitama Prefecture, Fukaya, Japan. The new facility augments Toshiba's production capabilities for large-size low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) thin film transistor (TFT) active matrix liquid crystal displays (LCDs).
Toshiba is currently mass-producing 4-, 8.4- and 10.4-inch LTPS TFT LCDs. The new Fukaya facility is expected to reach a production input capacity of 100,000 10.4-inch LTPS TFT LCD units per month by the end of 1999. Toshiba's investment in the facility and equipment totals more than $400 million (50 billion Japanese yen).
