National Human Genome Research Institute

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) of Bethesda, Md., part of the National Institutes of Health, has announced the results of a competition for support of its three large-scale sequencing centers. For fiscal 2007, the organization will award the Broad Institute Sequencing Platform at MIT in Cambridge, Mass., $48 million. The Washington University Genome Sequencing Center of St. Louis and the Human Genome Sequencing Center at Baylor College in Houston will receive $41 million and $27.6 million, respectively. The NHGRI and the National Cancer Institute jointly announced that the recipients will use much of this funding to identify genomic changes associated with cancer. The remainder of the funds will support continued research in comparative genomics, efforts to sequence the genomes of organisms that cause and transmit human disease, and projects of each institution’s choice.
