The curtain has closed on another Small World photomicrography contest, which has been hosted annually by Nikon since the mid-1970s. Every year, amateur and professional researchers, photographers and microscopists from around the globe put forth their best images to be judged. Nikon announced the winners on Oct. 8.

Dennis Breitsprecher of Hannover Medical School in Germany took this picture of fluorescent actin bundles growing from the surface of coated beads using in vitro total internal reflection microscopy at 63×.

Dr. Lloyd Donaldson of Scion, a research institute in Rotorua, New Zealand, was awarded eighth place for this 200× confocal image of cotton fibers stained with berberine sulfate. Images courtesy of Nikon.
