Sony Enters Flow Cytometry Business

Sony Corp. has acquired iCyt Mission Technology Inc. of Champaign, Ill., a producer of high-performance cell sorters used for stem cell and disease research, through its US subsidiary, Sony Corp. of America (SCA).

With the acquisition, the former company will apply its expertise and technologies to enter the flow cytometry business in the life science field. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of SCA, the Illinois-based company has planned to develop advanced technologies and deliver new products in collaboration with the former company.

Sony’s recent progress in regenerative medicine has highlighted the importance of cell analysis and flow cytometry for research. It plans to utilize its core technologies to create technological advances in flow cytometry.

The two companies have been jointly developing flow cytometry devices since April 2009. With the acquisition, the former company expects to accelerate its development of next-generation cell analysis systems.
