Emcore Sells Nine GaN Production Systems

SOMERSET, NJ, June 24 -- Emcore Corp. announced that it has sold nine additional SpectraBlue Gallium Nitride (GaN) TurboDisc production systems, raising the company's total number of GaN tools sold to date to 51. TurboDisc GaN systems are used to manufacture high brightness light emitting diodes and laser diodes in the blue segment of the color spectrum.
In January, General Electric announced the formation of a joint venture company with Emcore, called GELcore LLC, which will develop white light emitting diodes (LEDs) for use as low cost, long life, solid state alternatives to all types of conventional white light. GELcore will produce proprietary white LEDs by converting GaN-based blue semiconductor devices to white light through a combination of phosphors and plastics.
