Edmund Optics Engineer Speaks at Bio-optics Symposium

Amber Czajkowski, a thin-films engineer at Edmund Optics Inc. in Pennsburg, Penn., was invited to speak at the Symposium on Advanced Bio-optics and Related Medical Device Regulatory Considerations in Hong Kong.

The symposium included directors, investors, managers, engineers and manufacturers involved in the optical and biomedical engineering industries. Czajkowski’s presentation, titled, “Illumination for Surgery and Medical Diagnosis,” discussed the importance of good lighting in medicine and how such lighting can be achieved.

Inadequate lighting could lead to an overlooked problem or a misdiagnosis; and common light sources, such as incandescent and fluorescent lights are not ideal.

“Medical professionals often underestimate the degree to which lighting conditions impact their ability to make accurate diagnoses,” she said.

Additionally, she discussed light source characterization, why daylight-emulating illumination is preferred for medical diagnostics, and how standard incandescent lighting can be transformed to adopt the ideal characteristics with the help of filters or optical coatings.
