Du Wins Innovative Laser Technology 2010

Keming Du, DSc, managing director of EdgeWave GmbH, has won the Innovation Award Laser Technology 2010, which was presented at a ceremony during the International Laser Technology Congress AKL’10 in Aachen, Germany. The award, which comes with a prize of €10,000 (about $12,600), was sponsored by Arbeitskreis Lasertechnik e.V. and the European Laser Institute ELI.

Reinhart Poprawe, vice-president of the association Arbeitskreis Lasertechnik AKL e.V. and director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, welcomed nearly 500 attendees to the Aachen town hall, especially the teams of the 3 finalists and the 10 members of the international jury.


Du prepares to receive the Innovation Award Laser Technology 2010 at the ceremony held at Coronation Hall in Aachen, Germany.

Dr. Hans-Jörg Bullinger, president of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and dinner speaker of the ceremony, presented the award to Dr. Keming Du and his team at EdgeWave for the development of Q-switched Innoslab lasers for high quality micro-processing. The Innoslab technology is said to enable a variety of challenging applications with added value such as the micro-processing of glass, scribing, edge deletion, high throughput thin film structuring and pumping of dye lasers.

Innoslab lasers represent a new laser class which is suitable for a large variety of applications in different sectors of industry and research. With these features Innoslab lasers enable a variety of challenging applications with added value such as micro-processing of glass, scribing, edge deletion, high throughput thin film structuring, and pumping of dye lasers.

Du has been furthermore awarded the title of Fellow of both sponsors of the award. Du’s team, including Dr. Claus-Rüdiger Haas, Alexander Schell and Dr. Dailjun Li, were presented their awards by Ulrich Berners, president of Arbeitskreis Lasertechnik AKL e.V. and Dr. Stefan Kaierle, president of the European Laser Institute ELI.

The international jury selected two other innovation teams as finalists, which were also honored at the award ceremony.
