Newport Shows Off Solutions

Newport Corp. is putting the focus on applications.

The company had a number of products on display this week at the CLEO/QELS 2010 exhibition, and the displays were organized around applications for the technology. "We're featuring lasers," said Herman Chui, senior director of product marketing. "Especially lasers for science -- life and health sciences -- applications."

The trade show booth was set up with stations for major applications: molecular spectroscopy, ultrafast applications, atomic physics and the like. "We're looking at what problems we can solve," Chui said.

Jim Fisher, group director of the company's vibration control division, was enthusiastic about the Vision IsoStation, a new integrated workstation that has been years in the making. After surveying customers at the 2007 Neuroscience conference, Newport's engineers designed and built the table just for them. It was all about the accessories, Fisher said. "There were two main thrusts," he added. "They wanted a workstation that was easy to install and use, and a better stage and accessories."

So they improved the design and added new features such as new feet, new casters, a better overhead shelf system and a built-in level, but they also made installation easier. "We created a roll-off crate; everything is pre-installed," Fisher said.

But they're not stopping there. "We're hoping for more feedback at this year's Neuroscience, too," he said.
