SID: Microvision Demonstrates Laser Picoprojector

Microvision Inc., a developer of ultraminiature projection display products, is demonstrating its 720p, a high-definition-ready laser picoprojector, at the Society for Information Display’s (SID) annual conference (May 25–28) at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle.

The palm-size picoprojector outputs 15 lm while maintaining a compact, low-profile form factor, similar to the company’s WVGA (wide-video graphics array) product. A commercial product version of the 720p HD (high definition) PicoP display engine is planned for the second half of 2011.

The new, higher-brightness prototype highlights the capability of PicoP technology to support new performance levels while still maintaining the attributes of the existing PicoP platform, including:

    • Infinite focus.
    • Wide throw angle, providing an immersive visual experience.
    • Superior brightness uniformity.
    • High optical efficiency, resulting in low power requirements.
    • 5000:1 contrast ratio.
    • Vivid colors of up to 200 percent greater than standard broadcast television.

Besides the 720p demonstrator, Microvision is also showcasing the following developer tools, products and applications at SID in Booth #1401:

    • A handheld projection game controller that immerses users in a 360? gaming environment.
    • A see-through eyewear display prototype system that combines the company’s PicoP display engine with a thin, lightweight optical system delivering clear, bright projected images to the wearer’s eye.
    • PicoHud, a full-color vehicle head-up display powered by the PicoP display engine. Significantly smaller and brighter and with higher contrast than traditional head-up technologies, PicoHud will demonstrate the capabilities of the PicoP display engine for potential use in automobiles, specialty vehicles, trucks, buses and motor coaches.
    • Showwx, a palm-size, self-contained, battery-operated, full-color picoprojector. The award-winning device, available for sale today through a variety of distributors, is a stand-alone laser picoprojector intended for simple plug-and-play integration with mobile devices, such as iPod, cell phones, MP3 players, laptops and gaming devices.
