!%Cynosure Inc.%! has received FDA clearance for its Smartlipo system for laser-assisted lipolysis in which a laser fiber cannula is inserted into the skin and through the treatment area to cause fat cell disruption and coagulation, and skin tightening. The laser’s energy is applied directly to the fat cells, causing them to rupture and drain away. The procedure is believed to be less invasive than traditional liposuction, with less bleeding and swelling. It can be performed in as little as 45 minutes. The company intends to launch the product in 2007.
