Laser System Spots Dirty Laundry

Spectra Science Corp. in Providence, R.I., has demonstrated a laser-based system that identifies, counts and classifies soiled flat linens. The demonstration took place at Tartan Textile Services in Houston.

The system uses a laser to scan linens for stains. Special threads sewn into the linens are excited by laser light, enabling the system to quickly identify soiled sections. The demonstration marked the first time Spectra Science had integrated its search, point and shoot laser reader with the high-speed master sorting module manufactured by Lavatec Inc.
