Deadzone-Free, Naked-Eye 3-D Panel Showcased

AU Optronics Corp. announced that it will showcase a deadzone-free naked-eye 3-D notebook panel at FPD International 2010.

The company combines lenticular lens 3-D technology with the company SuperD's naked-eye 3-D solution to create deadzone-free 15.6" notebook and 10.1" tablet personal computer 3-D panels that do not require the use of special glasses. This technology is expected to provide consumers with a more convenient and comfortable 3-D viewing experience.

With an eye-tracking system that captures viewers' eyeball movements, AU Optronics’ deadzone-free naked-eye 3-D technology overcomes the confined viewing angles of conventional 3-D displays. Regardless of location, the viewers will be able to perceive 3-D images of equally high quality. Not only will there be better 3-D images to see, The audience will not only see better 3-D images, but also will feel more comfortable not having to be confined by viewing angles.

The new 3-D panels deliver high brightness and Moire-free image quality. Both 2-D and 3-D modes can operate concurrently on the same display, and the viewer can switch back and forth between the two modes while retaining high resolution. The audience can still read the text clearly as they enjoy the visually stunning 3-D images. This development satisfies an essential need felt by all users of 3-D information displays.

The displays, including 15.6" full HD and 10.1" WXGA panels, are expected to be mass produced beginning in the third quarter of 2011.

AU has dedicated itself fully to the development of 3-D display technologies. The efforts include the early deployment of patents, such as the acquisition of lenticular lens 3-D display solution from Ocuity. In addition, AU has collaborated with SuperD, the leading naked eye 3-D solution provider, to introduce SuperD naked eye 3-D solution in 3-D panels.

AU will invest HK$60 million in SuperD and acquire 10 percent of its shareholding. Together, AU and SuperD will work to enhance 3-D display technologies and to improve production capabilities for the advancement of naked eye 3-D information display technology. The naked-eye 3-D technology will be applied to personal computers and other display panels to readily deliver clear and vivid 3-D images, with no special glasses needed to enjoy a lifelike 3-D world.
