Applied Materials Hires CTO

Applied Materials Inc. announced the recent promotion of Dr. Omkaram Nalamasu to chief technology officer, effective Jan. 24, 2011.

In his new role, Nalamasu will report to Mike Splinter, chairman and CEO, and will provide critical insight to further enhance the company’s technology leadership in the industries it serves.

When serving as deputy CTO, Nalamasu led the company’s efforts through funding and incubation of long-term R&D and product development investments, global research investments in academia and consortia, and new business venture capital investments into start-ups.

Before joining the company in 2006 as its corporate vice president and general manager for the Advanced Technologies Group, he served as vice president of research and as a NYSTAR distinguished professor of materials science and engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He has also held positions at Bell Laboratories and Lucent Technologies.

The previous CTO, Dr. Mark Pinto, will remain at the company as executive vice president and general manager for its Energy and Environmental Solutions and Display groups.

Applied Materials provides innovative equipment, services and software to enable the manufacture of advanced semiconductor, flat panel display and solar photovoltaic products.
