Kopin Acquires Forth Dimension Displays
Nanosemiconductor company Kopin Corp. said it has expanded its display technologies portfolio by acquiring Scotland-based reflective microdisplays manufacturer Forth Dimension Displays (FDD) Ltd. for approximately $11 million in cash.
FDD makes ultrahigh-resolution reflective microdisplays used in cinematography, training and simulation, 3-D metrology and medical imaging. Kopin manufactures mobile computing headsets, ultrasmall liquid crystal displays for consumer and military applications and heterojunction bipolar transistors used in wireless handsets.
"With this acquisition we will be the only microdisplay manufacturer that can offer complete system solutions with either reflective or transmissive liquid crystal display technologies," said Kopin President and CEO Dr. John C.C. Fan.
The purchase price was approximately $11 million in cash plus an earnout provision if certain revenue milestones are reached within one year of the purchase date. FDD generated approximately $6 million in revenue in 2010 and Kopin projects that FDD will be accretive to 2011 earnings. All of FDD's key employees have agreed to join Kopin.
