In Green Island, N.Y., ultraviolet LED developer !%Crystal IS Inc.%!
announced that it has been awarded $5 million by DARPA. The grant is based on the
performance of the company’s existing 265-nm LEDs, which leverage Crystal
IS’ aluminum nitride substrate technology. The goal is to develop efficient
LEDs operating below 275 nm for water sterilization and numerous other applications
of interest to the US Department of Defense. Development of the LED will run in
parallel with the recently announced effort to produce large-diameter aluminum nitride
substrates.
