Varian Inc. of Palo Alto, Calif., has acquired Fourier transform mass spectrometry technology through its purchase of IonSpec Corp. of Lake Forest, Calif. The technique is used in laboratories to discover the function and structural characterization of proteins and other biomolecules. The information provides scientists with fundamental knowledge of how cells work and how diseases evolve, leading to new diagnostic research and drug targets. The company expects the agreement to facilitate the expansion of its technology portfolio and to increase participation in the study of proteins, nucleic acids and drug metabolites.
