Spectranetics' Laser Catheter Approved in Europe

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Sept. 9 -- Spectranetics Corp. has received approval for European marketing of a laser angioplasty catheter designed for use in larger heart vessels. The Vitesse C-OS (optimal spacing) 2.2-mm catheter is the largest diameter coronary catheter manufactured by Spectranetics. The device also may be used to clear coronary stents -- metallic scaffolds implanted to support arterial walls -- which have narrowed or constricted, a condition known as in-stent restenosis. Previously Spectranetics had received the CE mark of approval for treatment in Europe of in-stent restenosis involving stainless steel stents. Three smaller catheters in the company's Vitesse C-OS product line have already received the CE mark; these products have been submitted for US Food and Drug Administration approval.
