Corning CEO Touts ‘Exciting’ Year

At Corning Inc.’s annual meeting last week, CEO Wendell P. Weeks said 2010 was an “outstanding year” for the company, driven largely by sales of its Gorilla Glass, which tripled its sales over 2009.

Weeks said the company is financially strong, reporting first-quarter sales of $1.9 billion and growth in all business segments. He opened the meeting with a company video titled, “A Day Made of Glass,” which has become the most-viewed corporate video of all time on YouTube.

Other key trends driving the company’s growth include the need for “massive bandwidth” to facilitate real-time information and on-demand connections; the push for a greener environment, which creates demand for its emissions-control products; and the need for more productive pharmaceutical research, which drives demand for its drug-discovery tools.

“Based on these trends, we believe we have the potential to grow to $10 billion in sales by 2014,” Weeks said.

Corning celebrates its 160th birthday this year.

A manufacturer of specialty glass and ceramics, Corning creates and makes components that enable high-technology systems for consumer electronics, mobile emissions control, telecommunications and life sciences.
