University of Rochester in New York

A technology that has helped improve eyesight is now more widely available, thanks to approval by the FDA. Created by physicians and scientists at the University of Rochester in New York, the Rochester Nomogram marks an advance for patients who undergo lasik surgery. A company that has licensed the technology from the university announced that the FDA has approved its use in its refractive surgery system. Technolas Perfect Vision GmbH of Munich, Germany, is a cataract and refractive laser company that was formed through a joint venture of Bausch + Lomb and 20/10 Perfect Vision AG. It offers the Nomogram technology in its refractive surgery correction system. The Nomogram adjusts the way a laser interacts with a person’s vision, reducing the chances that the eyes will be near- or farsighted after the procedure. Patients at the Flaum Eye Institute in Rochester have benefited from the research.
