Optics and Electronics Partnership

Based in Culver City, Calif., Apic Corp., a supplier of photonics technology integrated with electronics, and the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, University at Albany, State University of New York, have formed a $10 million partnership to develop and commercialize “green” technology to enable faster and more energy-efficient computer chips. The collaboration aims to produce a new generation of modules and systems using photonic integrated circuits, which combine optical communications with silicon-based CMOS technologies. The technology will address the ever-increasing needs for higher bandwidth and computing power in areas such as data centers, medical research, financial transactions and gaming. The partnership is expected to create jobs, spin off business opportunities, and spur technological advancement in the Albany area.
