Arbor Photonics Awarded Fiber Laser Funding
High-power fiber laser solutions provider Arbor Photonics Inc. was awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract from the US Army to develop a compact, rugged femtosecond laser for hazardous materials detection, it announced.
Under the program, the company plans to develop >100-µJ, <100-fs fiber lasers based on proprietary 3C (chirally coupled core) optical fiber. The 3C fiber uses an internal structure to produce single-spatial-mode output from very large core fibers.
When produced in a compact, robust format, the laser will permit significant progress toward the Army’s goal of accurate and sensitive remote detection of hazardous materials. The company said it will also develop commercial applications for this technology.
