Boeing to Develop Navy Laser Under BAE Systems

The Directed Energy Systems Div. of Boeing has signed a teaming agreement with BAE Systems to develop the Mk 38 Mod 2 tactical laser system for the defense of US Navy ships, it announced yesterday.

In March, BAE Systems received an initial contract from the Navy to build a demonstrator unit of the system. Boeing is a subcontractor to BAE Systems under this contract.

The Mk 38 Mod 2 tactical laser system couples a solid-state high-energy laser weapon module with an Mk 38 machine gun system. The laser addition will offer the Navy ships high-precision accuracy against surface and air targets such as small boats and unmanned aerial vehicles. In addition, the systems can deliver different levels of laser energy, depending on the target and mission objectives.

The two companies have worked together for the past two years to develop the new capability.
