Taiwan predicts LED turnover of $6.8 billion in 2012

Compiled by Photonics Spectra staff

Taiwan’s LED industry likely will surge 32 percent in 2012, generating revenue of $6.8 billion, up from 2011’s projected $5.2 billion, according to the island’s Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association (PIDA).

In 2010, the local industry’s turnover exceeded $3.4 billion for the first time. PIDA attributes the tremendous boost to growing worldwide demand driven by LED lighting incentives in many countries, including Japan’s ECO-Point program, which encourages the use of LED bulbs and light tubes; Beijing’s 12th Five Year Plan also promotes LED lighting, and it offers subsidies to consumers and enterprises using energy-saving lighting. Taiwan possesses the world’s second-largest LED industry, with nearly 25 percent of the world market.
