Sony's Wales Facility to Make LED Streetlights for Europe
Sony’s Welsh technology facility has been selected to manufacture energy-efficient LED street lighting systems for the UK and Europe.
The Sony UK Technology Centre has been working with Canada-based LED Roadway Lighting Ltd. (LRL), maker of low-carbon, energy-efficient lighting systems, to set up a manufacturing line. LRL said that it chose to target the UK and Europe because of its massive potential market — the UK alone has 6 million street lighting units.
The Pencoed facility has already received a first order for 2000 fittings, with production starting in early October. It expects to receive soon an order of 26,000 additional units.
Sony is anticipating that up to 10 jobs will be created at the Pencoed facility to meet the initial order. If this technology is rolled out to other councils throughout the UK, there is the potential for significant growth.
