Navitar Life Sciences Inc., an affiliated entity of optics
manufacturer !%Navitar Inc.%! of Rochester, N.Y., has agreed to acquire the assets
of !%9762%%Modulation Optics%!, including its Hoffman Modulation Contrast (HMC) imaging
technology. The Glen Cove, N.Y., company makes HMC microscope components and systems
for use in live-cell imaging applications such as stem cell imaging, cancer studies,
and embryo and sperm monitoring during in vitro fertilization procedures. The technology
is used to view colorless and transparent biological specimens. The acquisition
enables Navitar to expand its product offering beyond its mainstay ZFL fluorescence
imaging optical systems. HMC will now be used in combination with Navitar’s
other illumination techniques, such as differential interference contrast, dark
field, bright field and fluorescence to achieve high-quality images. HMC can be
applied to most objective lenses.
