Universal Display Awarded $1M Contract for White OLEDs

Organic LED (OLED) technologies provider Universal Display Corp. has received a $999,963 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II grant from the US Department of Energy (DoE) to further the performance of large-area, phosphorescent OLED (PHOLED) lighting panels through enhanced thermal management techniques.

Building upon the achievements demonstrated during its previous Phase I program, Universal Display will design and build large-area white OLED lighting panels in the Phase II program using its energy-efficient UniversalPHOLED technology and materials in conjunction with thermal management techniques. The thermal management method will minimize operating temperature and extend the operating lifetime of the panels.

The DoE has supported research and development of solid-state lighting, including OLED lighting, since 2003. It is estimated that by 2030 the development and widespread deployment of solid-state lighting could reduce national electricity use for lighting by one-third.
