Trumpf’s Leibinger Wins LIA Schawlow Award
Berthold Leibinger, chairman of the Trumpf Group supervisory boards, has received the Laser Institute of America’s (LIA) Arthur L. Schawlow Award, considered a lifetime achievement honor in the field of laser research.
The jury emphasized Leibinger’s contributions to the advancement of the Trumpf Group — making it a global leader in the manufacture of industrial lasers and laser systems — and his activities in conjunction with the Berthold Leibinger Foundation.
“Professor Berthold Leibinger built Trumpf into a premier worldwide manufacturing company. He was instrumental in adding industrial lasers to the product lines, making Trumpf a leading company in this field,” said Stephen Capp, president of LIA.
Under Leibinger’s leadership, Trumpf became an innovations leader in the field of industrial laser technology. Its lasers are used in various high-tech manufacturing industries such as automotive, microelectronics and photovoltaics; they are employed also in medical technology.
Leibinger accepted the award on Oct. 26 in Orlando, Fla.
The Arthur L. Schawlow Award, valued at $2,000, has been presented annually since 1982. It recognizes achievements in either basic or applied laser research.
