Alcatel, Brazilian Operator Sign Contract

PARIS, Oct. 18 -- Pegasus Telecom, a Brazilian data communication service provider, has named Alcatel to be its technology partner for the optical backbone of its dense WDM and SDH-based network. With an estimated value of US $120 million (EUR 115 million), the contract includes the supply of all equipment for the four phases of the project and implementation of a turnkey network for the first two phases.
The project will use 6000 km of 72-fiber optical cables. The network will enable data, voice, and image traffic after its installation along interstate highways linking the cities of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, and Porto Alegre. The Pegasus dense WDM/SDH infoway will offer transmission speeds from 100 to 400 Gb/s; it will be the first such network in the Brazilian telecommunications market.
