Lucent and Embratel to Build Brazilian Network
NEW YORK, Oct. 28 -- Lucent Technologies Inc. will join Embratel, a Brazilian long-distance telephone company, in building the first nationwide high-speed data network in Brazil. In a company statement, Lucent noted that this network will allow Embratel to offer its customers such services as high-speed asynchronous transfer mode and frame relay backbone connections, as well as dedicated and dial-up Internet access and virtual private networks.
Lucent's NetCare Professional Services division will work to plan, design, and implement the network. Embratel has the largest long-distance telecommunications network in Latin America; the company has been part of MCI WorldCom Inc. since the 1998 privatization of Telebras, Brazil's state phone company.
