FEI Acquires Aspex Corp.
FEI Co. announced it paid $30.5 million to acquire Aspex Corp. of Delmont, Pa., a company that makes scanning electron microscopes for environmentally demanding military, industrial and factory floor applications.
FEI said that Aspex makes a ruggedized electron microscope that is paired with its own software as part of the QEMSCAN WellSite product it markets to the oil and gas industry. With the purchase, FEI now owns the hardware and software that have contributed to its growth in the natural resources market.
Aspex last year generated $10 million in sales and was profitable. Its revenue has grown at a compound annual rate of 24 percent since 2006.
FEI makes electron and ion beam microscopes and other imaging and analysis systems for nanoscale applications such as semiconductors, the life sciences, data storage and natural resources.
