GSI Group Rebrands as JK Lasers

Returning to its roots and reinforcing its long history, the GSI Group Laser Div. has rebranded itself as JK Lasers.

The company, which marked its 40th anniversary earlier this year, develops and manufactures Nd:YAG and fiber lasers for industrial applications. It first began producing a range of pulsed lasers using ruby, YAG and glass laser rods, then moved on to manufacture the MS series Nd:YAG laser systems for welding, cutting and drilling.

In 1982, the company was acquired by Lumonics of Canada, forming one of the largest laser companies in the world, it said. During this time, the company developed and installed the first fiber optic delivery system on a solid-state laser.

The company merged with General Scanning Inc. in 1999 and, after the sale of the Lumonics brand, the laser segment changed its name to the GSI Group Laser Div. (See: General Scanning and Lumonics Agree to Merge and GSI Changes Its Name) Retaining its staff and technical expertise, the company launched its first fiber lasers — the JK50FL and JK100FL — in 2007.

Today, JK Lasers manufactures not only fiber lasers, but also CO2 and Nd:YAG lasers, process tools and software. Its first multi-kW class of fiber lasers, the JK2000FL, was launched in April. (See: 2-kW Fiber Laser).

“We enjoyed strong growth during the first half of this year, and we expect to sustain this performance throughout the remainder of 2012,” said Mark Greenwood, general manager.
