Corning Opens Tech Center in Berlin
Specialty glassmaker Corning Inc. officially opened its new technology center for telecommunications customers on Wednesday.
Corning Technology Center Berlin is located in the Adlershof Science and Technology Park. Germany's largest technology park is home also to Humboldt University of Berlin, as well as 11 science institutes and 922 companies working in photonics, optics, solar technology, and materials and microsystems, among others.
"We have been a pioneer in the field of telecommunications since Corning scientists invented the first low-loss optical fiber in 1970," said Corning CEO Wendell P. Weeks in a keynote speech during Wednesday's opening ceremony. "In the 42 years since then, we have produced a steady stream of innovations that increase the efficiency and reduce the cost of optical networks. Yet we have barely scratched the surface in terms of unleashing the massive capacity and lightning-fast speeds that fiber optic networks can deliver. This center will help us create next-generation technologies to enable the on-demand information that consumers and enterprises value."
The new center is home to Germany-based members of Corning Cable Systems GmbH & Co. KG. The location makes the center easily accessible from Corning Cable Systems’ lead commercial office for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, also located in Berlin, the company said.
