OSA, China Partners Launch Photonics Research Journal

The Optical Society (OSA) will launch Photonics Research, a new peer-reviewed, open-access journal, in partnership with an optics institute and optics publisher in China, the society announced today. The first issue is scheduled to be published in June 2013.

Photonics Research, a joint publication of the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM) and OSA, will be an English-language bimonthly that publishes primarily original research papers, along with review articles. It will cover a broad range of optics and photonics from basic to applied research. Many of its features will mirror those of OSA's core titles and of the Chinese Laser Press (CLP) publication Chinese Optics Letters.

In a first for OSA journals, Photonics Research will follow a cascading peer-review system, which will benefit authors who may have submitted to another OSA journal but whose paper or topic area is more suited for this new journal, the society said. The title will be led by professor Zhiping Zhou of Peking University and will have an international editorial board.

Photonics Research provides a much-needed opportunity for the Chinese optical community to gain global exposure for their innovative research in a high-quality international journal," Zhou said. "It also functions as a bridge to link Chinese researchers with the rest of the world, and, conversely, to advance the presence of OSA in China.”

The journal will offer a subscription-based print edition available in China, OSA said. Articles will be accessible online via OSA’s Optics InfoBase and CLP’s OpticsJournal.net.

Paper submissions for Photonics Research will be accepted beginning in late December. The editorial board will solicit papers from a variety of optics and photonics research teams around the world, the society said.
